How a UK adult retailer became the #1 ChatGPT recommendation in their category in 30 days.

A specialist UK adult retailer had no AI presence and a brand-name confusion problem in a category with significant noise. Within 30 days the brand was named #1 on ChatGPT for its category, with daily AI mentions up 87% and clean recognition across Grok, Perplexity and Copilot. Most agencies won't take this category. The work isn't different to mainstream eCommerce, only the trust signals matter more.

Where they were

Real brand. Real products. AI couldn't tell them apart from the noise.

The official UK store for the brand had a real product line, a real audience, and a real customer base. The problem was disambiguation. The category had heavy noise around the brand name: knockoffs, dropshippers, lookalikes, generic listings. AI platforms didn't know which site was the official store and tended to refuse to recommend anything in the category at all.

When we ran a starting audit, no major AI platform returned the brand by name. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews either returned a generic non-answer or routed to a competitor. The site had no structured entity, no clear knowledge graph footprint, no signals telling AI which retailer was the official one. Standard SEO was running into category-specific friction. Most search engines and AI platforms apply additional trust filters in restricted niches, and the brand was failing those filters by default.

Our task was specific. Build unambiguous entity signals that established the brand as the official UK store, then build the content depth, citation profile, and PR footprint that gave AI platforms enough trust to recommend the brand above the noise.

What we did

Discover, Authority, Command.

The engagement combined all three of our ongoing tiers. Discover built the entity foundations and disambiguation signals. Authority delivered the page restructure, content depth and citation profile that moved the brand from invisible to recommended. Command kept the brand at #1 through active PR placements, monthly tracking, and AI visibility software across all five platforms.

Discover Phase 1 · AI Setup

Established a clear brand entity.

The first problem was disambiguation. AI was confused about who the official brand was in a category with significant noise around the product name. Discover built an unambiguous entity foundation that gave every AI model consistent, authoritative signals.

  • Organisation schema with full brand and product entity mapping
  • llms.txt defining brand, products, materials, safety attributes and locations
  • Knowledge graph foundations mapping brand to category to product type
  • Normalised brand identity across all digital platforms
  • Official UK store status clearly signalled, eliminating AI ambiguity
  • Key page rewrite in an answer-first format optimised for AI extraction
  • 10-page audit deck setting the priority work for the Authority and Command retainers
Authority Phase 2 · AI Trust

Built the highest-trust presence in category.

In a restricted niche, trust signals matter more than in mainstream categories. Authority built the content depth, page structure and external citation footprint that made AI confident in recommending the official store.

  • Safety-first product pages optimised for AI reasoning and trust signals
  • Category pages explaining product types, materials and uses for LLM indexing
  • Publicly verifiable information surfaced for AI: shipping, location, safety guarantees
  • JSON-LD schema matched to recognised eCommerce and material ontologies
  • Two AI-ready page upgrades per month restructuring category pages
  • Six expert articles per month addressing real buying-intent queries
  • Three high-authority citations per month from credible publications
  • Author and brand schema maintenance reinforcing E-E-A-T signals
  • Cannibalisation audit consolidating competing pages into clear authority topics
Command Phase 3 · Full Service

Held #1 position with active management.

AI visibility isn't set-and-forget. Model retraining cycles, competitor activity and new platform launches require ongoing monitoring to protect market position. Command added scaled content, active PR, review signals, and AI visibility tracking software to keep the brand ahead of competitors.

  • Five AI-ready page upgrades per month total
  • Ten expert articles per month total addressing emerging queries
  • Five high-authority citations per month in category-relevant publications
  • Active review and reputation signal management
  • AI visibility tracking software monitoring citations across all 5 platforms month over month
  • Quarterly business review aligned with product launches and competitor activity
  • Citation accuracy monitoring with early warning when rivals gain traction

Restricted niches don't lock brands out of AI search. The trust signals just have to be cleaner. The category competition is often weaker than mainstream, which makes the work faster, not harder.

FAQ

Questions about AI visibility for eCommerce.

How long does it take to improve AI recommendations for an eCommerce brand?
This client saw measurable improvements within 30 days of the Discover setup, growing from around 40 AI mentions per day to 75-90 per day. Full authority and Share of Voice gains compound over 60-90 days as entity signals propagate across AI training cycles and citation networks.
Can restricted-niche businesses improve their AI visibility?
Yes. Restricted niches often have weaker competition for AI citations precisely because most brands haven't invested in entity clarity. This adult retailer became the #1 ChatGPT recommendation in their category within 30 days. Faster than most mainstream brands achieve similar results.
What AI platforms were impacted by this engagement?
Following the engagement, the brand achieved named recommendations across ChatGPT, Grok, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. Up from zero presence across all four platforms at the start.
What is AI Share of Voice and why does it matter for eCommerce?
AI Share of Voice measures how often a brand is named when users ask AI platforms questions in its category. As tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Grok replace traditional Google searches for product discovery, brands with high AI Share of Voice capture buyers before they ever reach a competitor's site.
